Beating Up A Boy Scout

My Daily Rant 6/7/2010

Imagine you are driving slowly through your brand new neighborhood.  It is the 7th anniversary of 9/11, and you find your heart swelling with pride as you notice that so many homes in your neighborhood feature matching American flags in their front yards.

"Wow, I live in a great neighborhood" you think to yourself.

As you pass the intersection just a few blocks away from home, you pass your sister's house.  You slow the truck down as you notice a disturbing sight.  A pickup has slowed at the curb, and a group of young boys rushes from the bed of the pickup to your sister's yard.  They violently pluck the flag from the lush grass, and make a beeline back towards the waiting truck.

"Not on my watch."  You say to yourself.  You sharply jerk the wheel and come to a stop in front of the house.

"What the heck do you think you are doing?"  You scream.

The boys freeze in place, turning slowly towards you as one might do to a person aiming a gun at their head.

********************************************************************************************************************

You ride along in the back of the pickup, enjoying the breeze in your face and the laughter of your buddies.  The sun is slowly setting on the horizon, splashing an array of pinks, purples and oranges across the sky.  The air smells of outdoor grills and lilacs, mixed in with a little bit of sunscreen smell left over from the day.  Life is good.  You feel proud to be here with your friends.  These boys are like your brothers.  You know in your heart that the task you are embarking on is one that will only strengthen your bond and teach you invaluable life lessons.  As you jump from the pickup bed and head towards your duty, an angry screech pierces the quiet dusk.

"What the heck do you think you are doing?"  The blond woman is storming from her pickup towards you.  Your heart pounds in your chest as you try to decide what your next move should be.

One of your buddies steps forward as the woman gets closer, yelling, "You think it's funny to steal someone's flag on 9/11 ya little punks?"

Ever the valiant soldier, your friend meekly says, "Um, ma'm.  We're the boy scouts.  We put the flags up in the morning and then take them down at night."

Oops.

True story.  I get a call a little after sunset and could hardly contain my amusement as my sister tells me how she yelled at the boy scouts in my yard.  It's now a year later and time once again to make the donation to my local boy scout troop so they can put an American Flag in my yard for every holiday.  I think I should throw in an extra $10 this year, don't you?

Special thanks to my sis for granting permission to share one of her unsmooth moments :)

Bucky,

You are a true Patriot. Valiantly confronting these Blue and Gold bandits without regard to life, limb or automobile insurance premiums in the protection of Life, Liberty and Property. You and your sister are to be commended and honored.

One little thing,

Please put a post-it note on your dashboard reminding you of the special Holiday services provided by these little devils. It could save your insurance rate. Something like this might work and you can print it if you would like;

I SUPPORT OUR TROOPS…….Boy Scouts too.

Funny as usual. Keep the “unsmooth” moments coming. Since you apparently can’t control them, you might as well use them to entertain us. Very Funny.

At least $10 for the mistake! Why does that sound like something I would do? Except someone would call the cops and I'd have angry parents and the police standing there on my doorstep further calling attention to my mistake! Great laugh so early in the morning.

Jessa: You haven't heard this story? Seriously?

readytoescape: I don't have any problem remembering, and now, due to the restraining order, my sister can no longer set foot on the premises. Just kidding! Yes, I am trying to learn to use the unsmooth moments to my advantage!

Miss Audrey: I think you, me and my sis could have some laughs together. of course it might end up in an ER visit, but sometimes you just have to take one for the team!

De Greek: Glad I could make you laugh this morning:)

resspsenser: Thanks for stopping by as always!

Well....excuse me!!! Just goes to show that there still are some good kids around. I loved the way you twisted the story around from both perspectives. It really made the whole thing a lot funnier in the end. You are a good writer Bucky, you just don't do enough of it! Thanks for a great laugh! WB

Neighborhood watch on it's toes. "We assault first and call the police later".

There isn't the respect for our country, much less our flag, as there was years ago. Way to go!

Kael, thanks for stopping by! She felt really bad and quickly apologized once she realized her mistake:)

Austinguy: I agree! It's really nice to see patriotism still alive in my neighborhood!

Ok, as the sister with the unsmooth moment, I would like to say "Thanks" to all those sticking up for me sticking up for my sister's flag. And a quick correction. As I'm driving up the street the boys literally ramrodded into the curb in front of my sisters house and jumped out like they were a friggin SWAT team, not boy scouts.(And they were not, I repeat, NOT in uniform) Where were the navy shirts with the goldenrod piping on the sleeves? I honestly thought I was being punked, but then I realized that I am not famous and nobody cares....so I figured I better take matters into my own hands. No way in hell was I going to let three little tweens steal a united states flag on 9/11! Those poor boys. I felt really bad when I drove off and my kids were in the back seat saying "Mommy, why were you yelling at those boys?" I was thinking "Great, I made a boy scout pee in his pants." Sad thing is that every single house in the neighborhood has a flag in their yard, and the boy scouts have NEVER come to my door asking me to "purchase" a flag. Am I on a list somewhere? You know, like pedophiles. The list that tells you where they live and where to NOT go? I still have no regrets for standing up for my sister's flag!
